CGT Calculator

Work out the tax on the profit from a PSX share sale. Your rate is set by the date you bought, so the same gain can be taxed at anything from nothing to 30%.

On most acquisitions a non-filer pays double on the same gain.

The rates, by when you bought

Every rate below still applies today, an old holding is taxed under the rules in force when it was acquired, which is why the table runs back to 2013. Non-ATL columns reflect the 100% increase under the Tenth Schedule where it applies.

Non-ATL holders of securities bought on or after 1 July 2025 are charged at slab rates with a 15% floor rather than a flat doubled rate, and the Finance Act 2026 removed the Tenth Schedule exclusion that created that treatment. Confirm the current-year position against the latest NCCPL rate notice before relying on the last row.

How the rules changed

Six pieces of legislation shaped the rates above. Knowing which one your holding falls under explains most of the difference between two investors paying different tax on the same gain.

1 July 2013

CGT on listed securities moves to the NCCPL-collected regime. Anything bought before this date stays outside it and is never charged.

Finance Act 2019

The filer and non-filer split hardens: 15% for ATL investors against 30% for those off the list on newer acquisitions.

Finance Act 2022

Everything bought between July 2013 and June 2022 is fixed at a flat 12.5%. New buys get the six-year sliding scale from 15% down to zero.

Finance Act 2024

Division VII is replaced. Buys from 1 July 2024 carry a flat 15% for filers with no holding-period relief at all.

Finance Act 2025

Non-ATL investors move to slab rates with a 15% minimum, and the six-year relief is narrowed to pre-July-2024 holdings.

Finance Act 2026

Rates left alone, but the Tenth Schedule exclusion that shielded non-filers from the 100% increase is removed from 1 July 2026.

Worth knowing

The tax is on the gain, not the sale

Sell Rs. 3,000,000 of shares that cost you Rs. 2,000,000 and the tax is worked out on the Rs. 1,000,000 you made, not the full proceeds.

It does not touch your salary

Gains on securities are taxed separately under their own rate. They are not added to salary or business income and will not push you into a higher slab.

A loss carries forward

Losses on securities can only be set against gains on other securities, in the same year or for up to three years after, never against salary or business income.

NCCPL collects it for you

It computes the tax from its own trade records, collects it monthly through your broker and issues a certificate after year end for your return. Its figure can differ slightly from this one.

Dividends are separate

Dividend income is taxed on its own when paid, under a different section. This page covers only the profit on selling the shares.

Your buying date is what matters

Two investors selling the same share on the same day can pay different rates. Holding longer only reduces tax on shares bought between July 2022 and June 2024.
